Endowed Graduate Fellowship (2018)
As described elsewhere on this site, in 1999 an anonymous donor had created an endowed scholarship in Michael's name for a worthy undergraduate.
Almost two decades later, a Michael Friedlander Fellowship for a grad student in physics was created as well. I (David) had known about this obliquely, but I never knew who created it nor anything else about it.
In November 2025, someone forwarded to me a new article from The Ampersand, Washington U's "Natural Sciences and Math Magazine". The article was "The Physics of Philanthropy: One Alumnus' Lasting Impact."
The article is primarily about Wells newly endowing a faculty position in the Physics Department. But it also describes at some length why he admired Michael, and was moved to create the Michael Friedlander Fellowship in 2018.
This solves a mystery for me!
(It is also humbling that people admired Michael to the extent that they donated money to the university (and in sufficient quantity) to endow scholarshps and fellowships in his name.)
